Kahit sa lesbian couple (played by Maui Taylor and Rose Van Ginkel) iikot ang istorya ng 69+1 na sinulat at dinirek ng busiest director at the moment na si Darryl Yap, ayaw umano niyang ma-tag sa lesbian love ang istoryang kanyang sinulat.
Wala naman daw kasi dapat kategorya ang love. Love is love kahit kanino pa man sine-share ito. Genderless, kumbaga.
“It’s just love,” matter of fact na say ni Direk Darryl sa virtual media conference ng 69+1 kamakailan.
At kung tutuusiin daw, ito palang 69+1 ang mako-consider niyang love story palang among the nine films he’s done so far for Viva/Vivamax.
“As much as possible I don’t want the film to be tagged as lesbian love,” panimula niya. “For me po, sa totoo lang, simula nu’ng gawin ko ’yong #Jowable hanggang sa Ang Babaeng Walang Pakiramdam, hindi ko kinunsider na love story ’yong mga ’yon.
“Tapos when I pitched Ang Manananggal na Nahahati ang Puso, after 69+1… nu’ng pini-pitch ko po ’yon, sabi ko this is my first love story. Tapos, bigla po akong nag-hold back. Sinabi ko, ‘No this is actually my second because the first love story I did was 69+1 because I want it to be legit, to be put on record that this is not a lesbian love. But this is a love story of three people trying to find love in their own stories.
“So, as much as possible, I don’t want this film to be tagged as lesbian love or lesbian love plus one.”
Hindi nga raw niya akalain na makakagawa siya ng ganitong istorya pero excited siya sa kinalabasan lalo na isang specific scene kung saan magbibitawan ng damdamin ang tatlong main characters ng kanyang pelikula.
“This is actually also a revelation to myself,” nakangiting patuloy niya. “Akala ko hindi ko kasi s’ya magugustuhan pero naku kailangan n’yong panoorin ’tong dalawang ’to [Maui Taylor and Rose Van Ginkel] at pa’no sila ginulo ni Janno.
“Sa totoo lang, napaka-ano… sobrang swak na swak talaga ’yong sa seven minutes dialogue nila. You’ll never feel na may gender sila. No. Parang makaka-relate ka du’n sa isa…kung lalaki ka man, babae ka man, bading o tomboy ka man, makaka-relate ka kasi parang gano’n mo kausap ang partner mo maging sino ka man.
“So, this story is a celebration of love and this is not lesbian love but this is just love.”
Polyamory ang tema ng pelikula. Isang taboo subject matter para sa mga Pinoys na bagama’t nakaka-ilang pag-usapan para sa nakararami ay tunay na nagaganap. Sa istorya, Maui and Rose are long-time lesbian couple who wanted to spice up their relationship by welcoming a third consenting entity (Janno Gibbs). They will live under one roof and actively participate in all aspects of a relationship.
Anumang ipasok na bago sa anuman, paniguradong may ipapasok din itong bagay na babago sa nakasanayang sistema. At doon na papasok ang twist ng open relationship-themed story.
Isang punto pang gustong baliin ni Direk Darryl ay may kinalaman sa phrase na “love wins” na karaniwang associated sa LGBTQ+ relationships. Hindi raw “love wins” ang punto ng istorya ng 69+1. Personally, hindi rin daw kasi siya naniniwalang “love wins” na lalo na as far as LGBTQ+ relationships are concerned. Hate crimes and discrimination against all forms of homosexuality remain prevalent nga naman.
Kung may naiwan man, it’s the love between or among those in relationships and therefore, love survives. Hindi nanalo pero nagpapatuloy.
“Well, ako po kasi never ko pong ginamit yang quote na yan na ‘love wins’ because if you claim that love wins, then ano po ’yung natalo?” balik-tanong niya sa amin nang mas ipa-elaborate namin ang ibig niyang puntuhin.
“’Yung hate? ’Yung indifference? ’Yung discrimination? It’s like fooling ourselves. It’s still around. Hindi pa s’ya natatalo. So, ako as a reality-rooted scriptwriter and director, I always go for the truth. And it’s not true that we have won the battle against hate and discrimination.
“So, I don’t wanna put it as love wins. I wanted it to be love survives—na in this day and age kahit pa napakaraming tumutuligsa, napakaraming nagsasabing bawal, hindi maganda, hindi akma pinagbabawal ng Diyos, ng simbahan, o ng lipunan…real love, true love survives.
“Hindi mo kailangan manalo. Ang kailangan mo lang ay magpatuloy. And I think that’s what’s important in a relationship.”
