With the more than two dozen showbiz people who left this world in 2021, the afterlife perhaps can now build its own Filipino entertainment industry. Let’s look back and remember the personalities who went ahead of us and see what artistic talents they may continue to share in the world beyond.
Producer Kitchie Benedicto can perhaps bankroll television musicals the way she did when she was still queen of Broadcast City – the TV complex that housed Channels 2, 9 and 13 during martial law. Her shows may topbill Victor Wood, Mildred Ortega and Claire de la Fuente. And why not Alon of Puso Kong Bato fame?
Also, for all we know, there could be jukeboxes in the life beyond. Imagine Victor Wood and Claire de la Fuente reliving their titles as Jukebox King and Queen.
If they want alternative music, they’ll have Heber Bartolome and Juan de la Cruz Band guitarist Wally Gonzalez.
The musicals will be directed by Bert de Leon, who was among the best in the field. Why, he can be joined by Arlene Tolibas as floor director.
Since Arlene also did on-cam roles in TV comedies, sitcoms can be put up for her – along with Shalala (Carmelito “Tolits” Reyes) and Mahal (Noemi Tesorero).
With Tony Ferrer up there, maybe they can mount action films – to be directed by Toto Natividad. Lyan Suiza, who died while on the set of FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano, can serves as assistant director. Mel Francisco can play support, while Richard Manabat will surely be an effective villain. In a cameo role – Royette Padilla.
If they want dramatic movies, they can cast Orestes Ojeda, Janet Bordon, and Alysson VII. Well, a movie or even a soap opera on television always needs senior actors to provide wisdom in the story. This is where Ester Chavez and Domingo Landicho can come in. Leo Abaya will do the production design.
They may also have room for indie movies. Oh, there’s Joseph Israel Laban who did the acclaimed films Baconaua, Nuwebe and Cuchera. Maybe he can find a new audience there – moviegoers who appreciate small, but relevant films.
Hah! If the past two Metro Manila Film Festivals turned out to be flops, an afterlife edition may just prove to be more successful. Danilo Lim, former chairman of the MMDA, the body behind the MMFF, can organize a Metro Afterlife Film Festival. MAFF for short? Why not?
For a higher form of art, they can organize a new theater company to be set up by Celia Diaz Laurel, who spent more than half of her life on earth with Repertory Philippines that brought Western plays to local audiences.
For a more Filipino flavor, Naty Crame Rogers will take care of putting up another theater group that will focus on works by Pinoy playwrights. She and Daisy Hontiveros Avellana, who went ahead in 2013, can re-create their Paula and Candida roles in A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.
Now, for the more risqué and less sophisticated type of entertainment, they won’t be lacking in talents who can do stand-up comedy. Ate Shawee (Marvin Martinez), Le Chazz, and Hans Mortel will take charge of the comedy bars in the afterlife.
But it’s not just entertainment they will have there. Arlene de Castro and Arlyn de la Cruz can set up a news and public affairs department to keep everyone posted on the latest heavenly news.
Ricky Lo can also report on what is going on behind the scenes. They all better be careful if they don’t want to be the subject of his blind items.
Film scholar Lynn Pareja will also be there to put on record and compile into a book the titles of each movie churned out up there.
Photos in Lynn’s books surely will be provided by ace photographer Raymund Isaac. That should be a handsome book – given Isaac’s caliber as lensman.
To critique all the works of these artists, no need to worry. They’ll have Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino members Nestor U. Torre and National Artist Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera as reviewers.
And finally, to make sure that film and television features do not break the moral code, no less than Manoling Morato will serve as guardian.
We all miss these personalities who said goodbye to us in 2021. Here’s hoping their artistic passions continue to burn even in the life beyond.
