It’s pretty hard to believe that one of American Cinema’s greatest actresses Meryl Streep has forgotten how to act after being locked down during the pandemic.

In Entertainment Weekly’s “Around the Table” chat, featuring Don’t Look Up stars Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, and director Adam McKay, the 72-year-old actress revealed she found it challenging getting into character after the pandemic forced everyone into a lockdown.

“I found it really hard. I didn’t feel funny in the lockdown. When I would come in to shoot my stuff, I’d get out of the car and hadn’t spoken to anybody in three weeks. I’d walk into the stadium in Worcester, put on the wig and the nails and the suit, and make a speech to all these people.

“I just lost it. I forgot how to act, I forgot what I was about. It sort of dismantles your humanity, to be isolated like that. But thank God for Jonah, because he kept us laughing,” says the three-time Oscar winner.

Don’t Look Up is a funny take on a global catastrophe and Streep plays the president of the United States Janie Orlean.

During a virtual interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in December 2020, Streep repeated her sentiment of being “so bad” when the film first started shooting.

“I would commute from my home in The Berkshires in Massachusetts to the Boston set of the film. When we had our first scene, I was so bad. I’ve been in this quarantine because they have to be very careful and I’m totally alone.

“My first scene was entering a stadium full of 20,000 people as the president, my big face on the jumbotron in front of me. And I completely lost it, I couldn’t remember anything.”

Another thing that made Streep quite uneased with the scene was the “not at all” normal happening on the set.

“First of all, there weren’t 20,000 people obviously. They’ll duplicate them in editing. There were extras all around the stadium. Lonely people separated by 20 feet of air, wearing masks and visors that are clear. The whole thing is so eerie and odd and disconcerting.”

Despite Meryl saying how bad she was on her first day, her co-star and on-screen son Jonah Hill claimed otherwise, applauding Streep’s performance as President Janie Orlean and calling it “rad” and not “bad”.

“Meryl was so rad, not because of your stature in your art, but because of how fun and funny you were in the pocket of this character.

“I had so much fun. Once we were in that Oval Office it was so cool because it was a bunch of people I either know really well and/or deeply respect. It was like, oh my god, we can joke around together.”

Leonardo agrees with Jonah. For one, he has witnessed Meryl’s mastery of the craft when they starred in the 1996 film Marvin’s Room.

“I haven’t worked with Meryl since I was 18 years old, and she had this incredible monologue, so to witness her mastery as an actor was a real gift.

“And then putting her in a room with Jonah Hill, who I’ve worked with and see as one of the greatest improvisational actors in the world, was inspiring.

“They nailed their characters and portrayed them as completely unhinged, undependable leaders, which was a huge motivation for Jen and I for the rest of the film. It was amazing to be reunited with both of them.”

Don’t Look Up began streaming on Netflix last December 24. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet and Ariana Grande.
