The Butcher | The big acting winners 2021

Despite the pandemic, award-giving bodies were able to successfully honor the best film outputs of the year. There were no live awards shows though. The ceremonies were done online.

The members of the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEED), which had been putting up the Eddys the past four years, were the first to announce their winners (for 2020). During the last quarter of the past year, the Gawad Urian of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino and the FAMAS were also staged virtually.

The Philippine Movie Press Club, the body behind the Star Awards, managed to hold multiple ceremonies honoring the best in film, television and music last year, but those were for 2019. The PMPC members have yet to select their choices for 2020.

In the case of the Luna Awards of the Film Academy of the Philippines, budgetary constraints obviously prevented the organization from holding even a simple awards presentation. In fact, it is not sending any film to the annual Oscar Awards in Hollywood this year.

But with the choices of the three award-giving bodies that managed to come up with their respective list of winners, maybe we can do a tally and find out who were the big acting champions in the past year.

We’re not sure though if the panel that selected the winners of the Eddys had access to Lahi, Hayop – or if the members didn’t have the patience to sit through a lengthy Lav Diaz movie (this one is relatively short) – because this important film did not seem to figure even in the group’s list of nominees.

We will still incorporate, however, its choices in the overall tally of the big acting winners selected in the past year.

For best supporting actress, Dexter Doria had the most wins (for Memories of Forgetting). She was the FAMAS winner in this category and tied with Hazel Orencio (Lahi, Hayop) in the Gawad Urian.

The Eddys winner for best supporting actress though was Shaina Magdayao (for Tagpuan), which is also acceptable. Shaina actually figured prominently in the Urian and could have won, except that the race for best supporting actress was tight. The contest was so tough, the Manunuri members had to declare a tie between Dexter and Hazel.

For best supporting actor, the winner’s got to be Enzo Pineda for He Who is Without Sin. Enzo only won in the FAMAS, but in the Gawad Urian, he was a very close second to Micko Laurente (for Watch List), the critics’ choice in this category.

Enzo, in fact, tied with Micko in the first round of the Urian voting, but eventually lost in the final selection. He was very close to winning the trophy. The Manunuri would have been happy to declare him the winner, except that it was Micko who had the numbers in the end.

In the Eddys, it was Edgar Allan Guzman who came out victor for best supporting actor. He won for Coming Home.

It’s difficult to choose the winner for best actor because the three awards groups that honored the year’s best all had different choices. The FAMAS jurors had Allen Dizon (Latay) for their best actor. The Eddys had Paulo Avelino for Fan Girl. For Gawad Urian, crowned best actor was Nanding Josef for Lahi, Hayop.

As per observation, every time the various award-giving bodies come up with different winners, that only means the contest wasn’t that tough. That’s why achieving a grand-slam is such a big feat since that clearly indicates that the awards organizations are one in their selection. And that it was the most solid performance of the year.

For best actress, it’s Alessandra de Rossi (for Watch List) hands down. She won in both the FAMAS and the Urian. Add to that the fact that Alessandra was also chosen as one of the best performers of the decade, along with Nora Aunor, Angeli Bayani and John Lloyd Cruz.

It’s quite difficult to choose the acting winners for 2021 since the voting members may have yet to take another look at the contenders. Yes, it’s best to have a second viewing to be able to really select the best in every category.

But already, there are some names that may figure prominently in the 2021 acting races. The list of possible contenders below is not arranged in any particular order.

Paolo Contis (A Faraway Land)

Yen Santos (A Faraway Land)

Dingdong Dantes (A Hard Day)

Kylie Verzosa (The Housemaid)

Jaclyn Jose (The Housemaid)

Alessandra de Rossi (My Amanda)

Christian Bables (Big Night!)

Daniel Padilla (Kun Maupay Man it Panahon)

Charo Santos (Kun Maupay Man it Panahon)

Rans Rifol (Kun Maupay Man it Panahon)

Janno Gibbs (A Hard Day)

Nico Antonio (Big Night!)

The one name that will be all over the race is John Arcilla. No, this is not because he was adjudged best actor at the Venice International Film Festival (On the Job: the Missing 8). His win there is not necessarily a guarantee that he will take home the lion’s share of the awards in local competitions. This is a different acting contest altogether.

But having also excelled in two other films — A Hard Day and Big Night! — it is safe to say that he was the most accomplished actor of 2021.
