GOODBYE, LOVE
The past year saw some showbiz personalities trying to shoo the virus away, while nursing a broken heart. Below are the high-profile couples who broke up in 2021:
* The Aljur Abrenica-Kylie Padilla split-up tore at the public’s heart. Married with two sons, they were truly in love with each other. But the two decided to end the union in April last year. They made an agreement that they won’t talk about the state of their marriage in public.
It was Kylie’s dad, Robin Padilla, who first talked about the couple’s separation in July. He implied in the process that there was a third party involved – from Aljur’s end.
The marital rift, however, became a truly messy after Aljur insinuated that there was, indeed, a third party, but it came from Kylie’s end. In between accusations, there was also talk about Aljur not being a good family provider. A Padilla relative revealed that Kylie’s bank account that was said to contain P6-M almost got wiped out because there was no money coming in.
Regarding Kylie’s supposed extra-marital affair, the actress flatly denied that. The denial came after she had undergone so much bashing on social media.
As an addendum to the story, AJ Raval admitted that Aljur had tried to court her, but nothing came of it.
* AJ also had her own breakup story in 2021. She broke up with boyfriend Axel Torres, a Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) housemate.
* The wedding of Bb. Pilipinas-World Maggie Wilson and DMCI heir Victor Consunji started with a hot and steamy prenup videos. But the marriage ended up getting charred after 11 years.
* Beatrice Gomez must be the most controversial Philippine delegate to Miss Universe after Isabel Lopez. For one, she is openly bisexual, which really isn’t an issue, except that it still became a hot internet topic shortly after she was crowned Miss Philippines. Later, she shared with the public her relationship with DJ Kate Jagdon.
But before she could even fly to Israel to compete in the Miss Universe contest, she and Kate broke up. With so much going on in her personal life, it was a wonder that she still ended up with an impressive Top 5 finish in the pageant.
* Beatrice’s predecessor, Rabiya Mateo, also split up with Neil Salvacion, a nurse, who had been her boyfriend for six years. The breakup was talked about when Neil joined PBB and shared how he had to compete with Rabiya’s crown.
* After dating for two years, Ciara Sotto and Fil-Am boyfriend Ian Austin decided to call it quits in 2021. Ciara was previously married to Jojo Oconer.
* Social media personalities Alodia Gosiengfiao and Wil Dasovich also confirmed the end of their relationship last November. Reason for their split: Incompatibility.
* It looked like their almost half a decade union was headed for the altar. But beloved couple Janine Gutierrez and Rayver Cruz decided to go separate ways – “due to lack of time for each other.”
So what is the role of Paulo Avelino in Janine’s life? Well, they are supposed to be a married couple in Marry Me, Marry You. They admit dating before though.
* This is a love triangle that went merry-go-round. Kristoffer Martin first leaves the mother of their daughter, AC Banzon, who is not a showbiz personality. He then allegedly hooked up with Liezl Lopez during a locked-in shoot. Or maybe that was the reason he left AC in the first place. It can be lonely while taping on location where one needs an inspiration to be able to work with passion.
And then, within a few months, Kristoffer was back with AC. It is said that this was after Liezl dumped him.
* This breakup at least has a happy ending. Jennica Garcia and Alwyn Uytingco are a happily married couple with two children. They had a marital rift last year, but reconciled eventually.
* This was a partnership between two brilliant minds. Gay couple Perci Intalan and Jun Lana had been together for the longest time. In 2013, they entered a same-sex marriage officiated in New York. Sadly, they decided to break up in the final month of 2021.
The good news is – they will continue with their collaboration even if they now have separate lives. Metro Manila Film Festival top winner Big Night! was one of their projects.
* This was a union that totally lost its spark, maybe because there was no electric current in their house. Yes, Merlaco cut off their electricity due to unpaid bills because the man of the house already refuses to provide.
Even after they said goodbye to each other, the Jomari Yllana/Joy Reyes separation still proved to be quite a mess – with both parties hurling accusations at each other. The now uncouple, however, still needs to have communication between them because they have two sons. And so the fight raged on in 2021.
* This separation wrote like a travelogue. Paolo Contis and Yen Santos leave for the Faroe Islands to shoot the film A Faraway Land. Fittingly enough, the story was about forbidden love.
It didn’t take long before Paolo’s partner, LJ Reyes, cried her eyes out after her breakup with Paolo Contis, who was previously married to former EB Babes member Lian Paz, but is now with basketball player John Cabahug.
LJ herself was in a serious relationship with Paulo Avelino. They have a son together.
In no time at all, LJ was in New York with her two children, the other one by Paolo. She was the one who was pictured as the victim in this breakup and got a lion’s share of public sympathy.
But life as travel companions continued for Paolo and Yen. After Baguio, they were next seen spending the holidays in Boracay.
HELLO, LOVE
Cupid must have spent a great deal of 2021 in quarantine. Not too many showbiz people figured in the romance department. Here are some of them:
* Kris Aquino and ex politico Mel Sarmiento. They are engaged to be married.
* Angelica Panganiban and Greg Homan. This pair had been an item since 2020, but went public with their romance only last year.
* Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque. How can you miss them when they are all over social media.
* Nadine Lustre and Christopher Bariou. So, goodbye James Reid for good?
* Jane Oineza and RK Bagatsing.
* Diego Loyzaga and Barbie Imperial.
* Maris Racal and Rico Blanco.
* Rabiya Mateo and Jeric Gonzales. They have yet to make a public admission, but they are always spotted together.
* Now, this should be named couple of the year: Edu Manzano and Cherry Pie Picache. Everybody is happy for them: their family and friends. Why, even Edu’s first wife Vilma Santos is happy for them. So, there’s no reason why this relationship won’t get any deeper this new year.
