The Hunger Games actor Stanley Tucci opens up about his cancer for the first time

One of Hollywood’s busiest actors, Stanley Tucci, opened up about his health crisis three years ago.

The 60-year old actor was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2018 and this is the first time that he talked about it in public.

Talking with Vera magazine, the actor, who is now in remission, candidly talked about going through chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

“The tumor was the base of my tongue. It was too big to operate, so they had to do high-dose radiation and chemo.”

Tongue cancer has an overall relative survival rate of 67 percent within five years of diagnosis, according to the American Cancer Society.

Tucci, who appeared in a number of films including his most memorable character as Caesar Flickerman in The Hunger Games film series, had hoped he would never have to go through a health crisis in his lifetime.

He opened up about his late wife, Kate Tucci, who went through similar treatment years ago. Kate died from breast cancer in April 2009 at the age 47.

“I’d vowed I’d never do anything like that, because my first wife died of cancer, and to watch her go through those treatments for years was horrible.

“You never stop grieving. It’s still hard after 11 years. It’s still hard. And it will always be hard.

“But you can’t let it … and she would never want any of us to ever wallow in that grief and let it take over our lives,” he continued. “She would never want that. She wasn’t like that.

“There’s all the blaming of yourself, which you can’t do, but you kind of do, and I’m just — I’m mostly sad.

“I have a photo of Kate and Felicity (Blunt, his current wife) together at The Devil Wears Prada premiere, which is so odd. We found out just before I did that movie that Kate had breast cancer. So, I did the movie, and she started treatments, and then we had the premiere, and then she was alive for four more years after that.”

After his cancer diagnosis, Tucci started to worry about his kids and how they will process this situation.

“It wasn’t easy for the kids (daughter Camilla,19; and 21-year old twins Nicolo and Isabel with Kate; Matteo,5, and Emilia, 2, with Felicity). It was hard for them seeing me on a feeding tube for six months. I could barely make it to the twins’ high school graduation.”

Being in remission, Tucci’s cancer is unlikely to return. The whole process gave the actor a new outlook in life.

“Cancer makes you more afraid and less afraid at the same time. I feel much older than I did before I was sick. But you still want to get ahead and get things done,” he proudly says.

The survivor that he is, Tucci worked on various projects in 2018 in the midst of his health crisis. He was able to finish shooting Night Hunter, A Private War, and Patient Zero, while also lending his voice to a role in the children’s film, Show Dogs.

Tucci, a former fashion model, took acting at a very young age. He made his film debut in 1985 in the John Huston’s Prizzi’s Honor. He did a variety of supporting roles in films such as Woody Allen’s Deconstructing Harry (1997), Sam Mendes’s Road to Perdition (2002), and Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal (2004).

In 1996, Tucci made his directorial debut with the cult comedy Big Night which he also co-wrote and starred in alongside Tony Shalhoub. He also played Stanley Kubrick in the television film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.

Tucci is also known for his collaborations with Meryl Streep in films such as The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Julie & Julia (2009). His other films include The Pelican Brief (1993), It Could Happen To You (1994), A Midsummer’s Night Dream (1999), America’s Sweethearts (2001), Maid in Manhattan (2002), Easy A (2010), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Margin Call (2011), The Hunger Games film series (2012–2015), Spotlight (2015), Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Supernova (2020).

Tucci has won three Emmy Awards; one for Winchell (1998), one for a guest appearance on the comedy series Monk, and one for being a producer of the web series Park Bench with Steve Buscemi.

Tucci was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Lovely Bones (2009). He was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children, for The One and Only Shrek! alongside Meryl Streep.

Tucci also starred in numerous television series such as the legal drama Murder One (1995–96), the medical drama 3 lbs (2006), Ryan Murphy’s limited series Feud: Bette & Joan (2017), and the drama Limetown (2018).

Since 2020, Tucci has voiced Bitsy Brandenham in the Apple TV+ animated series Central Park. In 2021, he hosted a six-part food and travel documentary series on CNN titled Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.
