The Netflix series, The Crown, was the night’s big winner for making a clean sweep in the drama category with eleven Emmys including best drama actress for Olivia Colman (leftmost).
After a virtual awards night last year, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards went on live broadcast this year at the Events Deck at L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, this year’s Emmy Awards (broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+) was held in outdoor tents to abide with the safety and health protocols of the City of Los Angeles. There was a limited list of invited guests and each guest must be fully vaccinated and submit to COVID-19 testing.
Everyone is required to wear a face mask and celebrities are allowed to take it off to pose for photographers on the red carpet.
The Netflix series, The Crown, was the night’s big winner for making a clean sweep in the drama category with eleven Emmys. These includes Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, best drama actress (Olivia Colman), best drama actor (Josh O’Connor), best drama supporting actor (Tobias Menzies), and best drama supporting actress (Gillian Anderson).
Colman was surprised to win and dedicated her Emmy to her father who passed away because of COVID-19.
“I would have put money on that not happening. I want to say thank you very much for this, this is amazing. And what an extraordinary end to this extraordinary journey with this lovely family. I loved every second of it and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I wish my dad was here to see this. So, I lost my daddy during COVID and he would have loved all of this.”
Apple TV+ comedy series Ted Lasso walked away with four Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, best comedy actor for Jason Sudeikis, best comedy supporting actress for Hannah Waddingham and best comedy supporting actor for Brett Goldstein.
“This show is about family. This show is about mentors and teachers. This show is about teammates, and I wouldn’t be here without those three things in my life,” says Sudeikis in his acceptance speech.
For the first time, the ceremony presented two categories that are annually given out at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards: Outstanding Variety Special (Live) and Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded).
This year, including its nominations at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Ted Lasso established a new record by becoming the most-nominated freshman comedy series in the awards’ history with 20 nominations. The Apple TV+ sports comedy surpassed the record held by the Fox musical comedy-drama Glee, which received 19 nominations in 2010.
Also making Emmy history is Mj Rodriguez, the first-ever transgender person to be nominated for a major acting Emmy Award for the series Pose.
