During the first virtual press conference para sa Ang Mananaggal na Nahahati ang Puso (AMNP), nabanggit ni Direk Darryl Yap that the movie was originally intended for the JaDine (James Reid and Nadine Lustre) loveteam.
Being the madaldal na tao that he is, nak’wento lang niya ang back story. Tila gitna ng 2018 nang pumirma si Direk Darryl ng exclusive contract sa Viva bitbit ang mga istoryang nagawa na niya sa teatro (SaWakas) o kaya ay sa VinCentiments Facebook page niya (na karamihan ay mga shorts).
By 2019, ginawa na niya ang film version ng viral shorts niyang #Jowable at kasabay noon ay natapos na rin niya ang istorya ng AMNP and he and Boss Vic del Rosario both had the JaDine tandem in mind para sa roles nina Ginniper and Giuseppe. Kaso, naabutan na ng end contract ni James at hindi na sila nag-renew-han ng Viva. Nadine, for her part, ay nag-decide na mag-self-manage na nauwi sa legal tussle with Viva.
’Yon lang sana ’yon. But during the second AMNP virtual mediacon, paulit-ulit na nabanggit ng press ang JaDine sa mga tanong, especially those directed at the “replacements” na sina Aubrey Caraan at Marco Gallo.
Direk Darryl deemed it proper na magsalita na on their behalf, lalo pa’t after niyang sabihin na pang-JaDine pala ang pelikula ay naging subject na ng bashing ’yong dalawa at maging ang pelikula mismo.
“Sa totoo lang because I’m a writer and I’m from social media, ’yong mga unang pelikula ng JaDine [alam kong] galing ’yon ng Wattpad. So, ako sinubaybayan ko din yan, kung pa’no nagsimula si Nadine [Lustre] at saka si James [Reid],” pagba-back story ni Direk Darryl.
(Ang Wattpad is an online publisher of stories for both pro and amateur writers. Ilan sa mga pelikula ng JaDine ay mga istoryang binili sa Wattpad gaya ng Diary ng Panget at Talk Back and You’re Dead na parehong ini-release theatrically noong 2014.)
At dahil nasubaybayan niya ang JaDine, naikumpara niya tuloy ang screen output nila sa nagawa nina Aubrey and Marco sa kanilang debut film ngayon.
“Mas magaling si Aubrey at saka si Marco sa kanila ngayon na nagsisimula itong dalawa. That’s my opinion. Ayoko kasi magsalita naman itong mga artista ko tapos mako-quote naman sila ng iba-iba tapos maya-maya sumawsaw na naman itong si Kuya Kim [Atienza]. Charot!”
(Darryl’s Kim Atienza chide ay may kinalaman sa pagle-lecture ni Kuya Kim kay Marco nang sabihan nito ang dati niyang ka-loveteam na si Kisses Delavin—via the first AMNP presscon—na magpakita naman ng buhay nito sa social media at hindi puro produkto o paid partnership ang nakikita ng publiko doon. Nag-reak si Kuya Kim on Kisses’ behalf. Prerogative daw ni Kisses ’yon at wala umano itong obligasyon na ipakita ang private life sa publiko.)
Ani pa ni Direk Darryl, sa presscon lang first ever nabanggit ang tungkol sa JaDine. Pagkatapos noon ay deadma na lahat.
“Nadine and James were never brought up sa shoot namin. Never kong narinig sa dalawang ito na, ‘Naku, galingang natin. Baka mamaya sabihin…’
“Or never kong sinabi sa buong set na, ‘O, tandaan ninyo this project is intended for Nadine and James so dapat…’ We don’t have that.
“And the reason why I shared the fact because I was asked kung ito ba dapat ’yong gagawin ng JaDine and I was told by the boss that it was so. Sinabi ko lang. Not for anything else.”
Kaya sana raw ay wag silang paratangan na nakiki-ride on sa JaDine. Dahil in the first place, in his opinion, ay hindi naman na “sila [JaDine] ganu’n ka-ingay ngayon.”
And in a true Darryl Yap fashion, sinabi niyang sa followers palang ng Beks Battalion and his own social media pages combined ay hindi na nila kailangang maki-sakay pa kaninuman para mag-promote.
“Beks Battalion has like, correct me if I’m wrong, how many million followers in Facebook? Like two million in Facebook? Chad [Kinis] has like one million-plus on Facebook. On YouTube. Viral…like, trending sila sa YouTube. Nasa Top 5.
“Hindi naman sa binubuhat ko ’yong bangko ko, but when I was very active on YouTube, nag-te trending ako, nag-number one ako sa YouTube during my time.
“And now, with six million followers ng VinCentiments [Facebook page]… with the power or the convergence of Beks Battalion—with Lassy, MC and Chad—ta’s ’yong husay ni Aubrey at ni Marco…nakaka-peste lang na sasabihin na nakiki-ride on kami sa JaDine.”
“We are not riding on any fandom or something like that,” he stresses. “Especially Chad is very JaDine fan. Naha-hurt yan pag sinasabing ginagamit ni Aubrey si Nadine or ginagamit ni Marco si James. Walang ganu’n. We never thought of it.”
Nasasaktan daw kasi siya sa mga artista niyang natitira mula ng bitawan niya ang mga salitang “JaDine.” Para sa kanya, more than his stars, they are his friends.
“So when people are bashing and saying things… it kinda irritates me,” dagdag ng no-filter na writer-director.
“Just to set the record clear… kaya ako nasasabihan ng mayabang because I’m always straight to the point…we don’t need any fandom to actually promote a movie,” pag-uulit niya.
“The movie itself… dapat hindi ako ang magsasabi nito pero sana mapanood ninyo…this is the best that I’ve done so far. Siguro ’yong best ko basura pa rin sa iilan or siguro ’yong best ko parang basic or mediocre pa rin sa nakakarami, pero this project is very close to my heart because I worked hard for it.
“Ito ’yong masasabi kong unang film ko na director na director talaga ako kasi sa Revirginized, medyo fan ako doon, e. Fan na fan ako ni Sharon [Cuneta] du’n nu’ng ginawa ko. But this is a project that I made with my friends…with Aubrey, Marco, and Beks Battalion…with the people I love like Teresa [Loyzaga], Gina [Pareño] and sir John [Revilla], and with my friends in Siquijor.”
Gets naman daw niya kung bakit nagtatanong ang press tungkol sa JaDine. But the issue, he says, has to end lalo pa’t masayang-masaya siya sa kinalabasan ng pagganap nina Aubrey at Marco.
“So, you know, connecting us to JaDine…that is the freedom of the press people to actually clarify things and I’m very, very thankful about that. But let me set the record straight: for me Aubrey and Marco did very well. If it’s the start of their love team, compared to what Nadine and James did before—it’s just my personal opinion—I think I made the right choice of picking these two because I can never imagine Ginniper and Giuseppe being played by any other actors.”
In fact, naging blessing in disguise pa nga siguro dahil kung si James, baka walang pa-pwet. Haha!
That’s the beauty nga daw of casting non-superstars dahil walang arte at wala ring tatamaang mga endorsement contracts na maraming bawal.
All’s well that ends well.
