May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honor to your nation by your works, by your actions, and to do credit wherever you shall go.”

Singer-actress-businesswoman Rihanna is declared a national hero in her hometown of Bridgetown in Barbados.

The 33-year old Barbadian native was awarded the honour by Prime Minister Mia Mottley during an event last November 30 to celebrate the island nation becoming a republic.

The ceremony was held to commemorate Barbados leaving the reign of the British monarchy after 396 years. Rihanna is the second woman and the 11th person to be declared a national hero of Barbados. The honor allows the singer to use the title “Right Honorable” in front of her name going forward.

Prime Minister Mottley says: “On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero for Barbados, ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty. May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honor to your nation by your works, by your actions, and to do credit wherever you shall go.

“Commanding the imagination of the world through the pursuit of excellence, her creativity, her discipline, and above all else, her extraordinary commitment to the land of her birth.

“Having satisfied that, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty has given service to Barbados which has been exemplified by visionary and pioneering leadership, extraordinary achievement and the attaining of the highest excellence to the Government of Barbados.”

Since 2018, Rihanna has had the honorary title of Ambassador for Culture and Youth in Barbados.

In 2008, former prime minister David Thompson declared February 22 as “Rihanna Day” and although it is not a bank holiday, Barbadians celebrate it every year.

Rihanna was born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown, before moving to the United States after she was discovered by New York-based music producer Evan Rogers in 2005.

Rihanna has become one of the biggest artists in the world with her hit singles, starting with “Umbrella” that won her a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration with Jay-Z. Her other hit singles are “Pon de Replay”, “Disturbia”, “Don’t Stop The Music”, “Rude Boy”, “Shut Up And Drive”, “Love The Way You Lie”, “Only Girl (In The World)”, “We Found Love”, and “Diamonds”.

As of September 2018, Rihanna has sold over 250 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Rihanna has sold over 10 million albums, while Nielsen SoundScan ranked her as the best-selling digital artist in the country, breaking a Guinness World Record for digital single sales of over 58 million as of 2012.

On July 1, 2015, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced that Rihanna had surpassed more than 100 million Gold and Platinum song certifications. According to Billboard, her total album sales stand at 54 million copies sold worldwide.

Rihanna has won 9 Grammy Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, 13 American Music Awards (including the Icon Award), and 7 MTV Video Music Awards (including the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award).

Rihanna branched out to acting making movies such as Battleship (2012), This Is The End (2013), Annie (2014), Home (2015), Ocean’s 8 (2018), and Guava Island (2019). She also appeared in the TV shows such as All My Children, Las Vegas, Punk’d, Richard & Judy, Planet Voice, Taff, Sacrée Soirée, The Morning Show, The Seven, Fantastic, Styled To Rock, and Bates Motel.

On social media, Rihanna has 112 million followers on Instagram, 103.6 million on Twitter and 102 million on Facebook.

Just recently, Rihanna was declared a billionaire by Forbes with a net worth of $1.7 billion, making her the wealthiest female musician in the world and second only to Oprah Winfrey as the richest female entertainer.

The bulk of her fortune (an estimated $1.4 billion) comes from the value of Fenty Beauty, of which Forbes can now confirm she owns 50%.

Much of the rest lies in her stake in her lingerie company, Savage x Fenty, worth an estimated $270 million, and her earnings from her career as a chart-topping musician and actress.
