The Butcher | Showbiz issues we talked about in 2021

Showbiz will not be showbiz without its usual controversies. And so here were the much talked about issues in the past year:

BUZZWORD OF THE YEAR

Nobody can tell how this term started. But Marites is said to have come from “Mare, eto ang latest.” Makes sense. Today, anybody who spreads gossip is branded a Marites.

Runner up to Marites is Mosang. This term obviously came from “tsismosa.”

TOURISTS OF THE YEAR

Their first destination was Faroe Island – for the shoot of A Faraway Land. Back in the Philippines, the film’s lead stars Paolo Contis and Yen Santos were spotted in Baguio.

They claim that they are just friends. But before the end of the year, they were seen again in Boracay. So, would they still insist that they are just friends? Hmm. Why don’t they trying labeling themselves as travel buddies?

LOAN OF THE YEAR

Mark Herras had never been known to handle his finances well. At the peak of his career, he got by because his earnings were being handled by his foster father, known in showbiz circles as Daddy Jun. Sadly, the time came when his two adoptive fathers and biological mom died practically one after the other.

Clueless as to what to do with his talent fee, Mark ended up a financial basket case. The situation got so bad, he had to borrow P30,000 from his then manager, Lolit Solis, so that he could allegedly buy milk and other necessities for his children.

Lolit can be generous and lent him the money. But it came with a reprimand – made publicly – that obviously embarrassed the actor. The netizens went up in arms in defense of Mark.

If there was anything good that came out of this issue, Mark is assured of projects with GMA – that is, until he has completely paid off whatever he advanced from his home network.

CHARITY CASES OF THE YEAR

Apparently, it wasn’t just Mark Herras who skipped Financial Management 101. Ping Medina also sent appeals on Facebook and asked for financial help. It was his birthday, after all.

As usual, netizens misread his message. They thought that he was asking for money so he could have a birthday party, which wasn’t his intention.

Janus del Prado gained more sympathy after he became homeless and was rejected by his family members – in spite of the fact that he took care of them financially when he was still earning well in showbiz. Heart-wrenching was how he was all alone and hungry mostly when he got sick of COVID.

FALSE ACCUSATION OF THE YEAR

At the end of the taping season for John & Ellen, Long Mejia publicly denounced Ellen Adarna for leaving the set even if the shoot wasn’t finished. What was it that he said about her? That she was unprofessional and that she ain’t a big star to be having that kind of attitude.

In a matter of hours, he took back everything he said and apologized to Ellen. Nobody told him about Ellen’s arrangement with bosses. And why should they tell him? Unless he thinks he is a big star who has to be consulted about every aspect of production.

THE ACCUSED OF THE YEAR

It’s a tie between Tony Labrusca and Enchong Dee. Tony is charged with acts of lasciviousness and the incident supposedly happened around this time last year.

Enchong Dee, meanwhile, was slapped with a P1-B cyber libel case. It was filed by the drivers’ representative in Congress, Claudine Bautista. The whole issue started after pictures of her wedding were posted online and drew flak from social media users, including Dee.

‘LAYA’ OF THE YEAR

In penology terms in the vernacular, “laya” means recently released from prison. It’s a tie again, this time between Julio Diaz and Mark Joven Olvido of Pilipinas Got Talent fame. Both served for drug cases.

SCAM VICTIM OF THE YEAR

Poor K Brosas. After saving up to build a house she can finally call her own, her scumbag of a contractor abandoned the project after taking off with a huge chunk of the budget. Never mind, K. You are bound to earn back what you lost considering the fact that you are talented and a hard worker.

But don’t let that contractor get away with it. Press charges. Your case will surely be a celebrated one and that should frighten other erring contractors.

FEUD OF THE YEAR

Janno Gibbs figures twice in this category. First, he fought with Happy Time co-host Kitkat. Oh, that was bloody. Before 2021 came to an end, he was back in the arena – with Giselle Sanchez as the opponent.

But for everything everyone said about this most recent feud, what most people did not see is the sense of decency displayed by the warring parties. Okay, they got rowdy during the media-con for Sanggano, Sanggago’t Sanggwapo 2. But instead of hurling verbal attacks at Giselle, Janno simply chose to sign off.

Was that rudeness? Maybe Janno just felt it was just best to leave and not fight before the press people. And to be fair, to Giselle, she already apologized to Janno after the incident.

BELOVED SOAP OPERA OF THE YEAR

First Yaya was also much talked about in 2021, but in a very positive way. This soap was originally meant for Marian Rivera and was supposed to start shooting before the pandemic. The actress, in fact, had already appeared in several teasers heralding the tele-serye.

COVID-19, however, became a global health menace and Marian eventually had to decline the role. As the mother of two very young children, her decision to say no to the part was understandable. For one, the taping of the series had to be done under lock-in conditions.

That meant being away from her kids for a long time. And since the pandemic situation was still very alarming that time, there could be a chance she’d be bringing the virus home and harm her children.

With Marian out of the picture, Sanya Lopez was taken in. She has to thank Marian for turning the part down because that spun her career around. Of course, Sanya wasn’t exactly some unknown starlet before First Yaya, but admittedly, it became the most significant role of her career – so far. With the success of First Yaya, she will have even bigger parts in the near future.

Everyone at GMA was actually happy for Sanya’s success because she had always been known to be a hardworking actress. She is also kind and is one of the easiest stars to deal with – perhaps not only within her network, but in the industry as a whole.

The public, meanwhile, truly appreciated First Yaya’s good vibes. It was handsomely packaged and had exciting plots – plus, interesting characters like Pepita, played by Kakai Bautista.

And so, here’s wishing Season 2 of First Yaya – now called First lady – all the best in 2022!
