“Hindi ako naging insecure kasi my father would always have this way of making me feel confident about myself lalo na kung madidinig n’ya sa harap ko na sasabihan akong ‘pangit.’

Natanong kasi s’ya ng TV host na si Bianca Gonzalez on how would she describe herself back then nang mag-guest s’ya virtually sa online show nito na Legends Only sa YouTube.

Kasi noong ’80s, I was starting and people know that I can sing but they didn’t really think na I’d make it kasi hindi ako masyadong maganda. Parang ganu’n,” pagbabalik-tanaw ni Regine.

Hindi ako kagandahan. ’Yan ang laging feedback sa akin. Parang, ‘Yeah, magaling s’ya kumanta pero…’ First of all, parang hindi uso ’yong sound ko.

May mga belter na nu’n pero they’re in a totally different league and I was trying to target a different kind of audience and apparently, I’m the only one who sounded like that in that particular audience that were trying to target.”

’Yon ’yong ano sa akin na parang… ‘Hindi s’ya masyadong kagandahan so baka hindi s’ya sumikat. Maputi lang,’” natatawang pagpapatuloy n’ya.

At dahil wala pa namang social media that time, harap-harapan daw ito kung sabihin sa kanya.

“And I was told, to my face ha, sinasabihan talaga ako, ‘Baka hindi ka masyadong [sumikat] kasi hindi ka masyadong maganda.

“I’ve always heard that since I was a little girl. I’ve always thought I was not pretty because I was told that I was ugly,” aniya.

“That didn’t make me insecure for some reason. I accepted that as a fact kasi sila ’yong tumitingin, e. So, I thought it was a fact—that I’m not pretty, that I was ugly.”

Buti nalang daw at matibay ang self-confidence n’ya dahil alam n’yang mahusay s’yang kumanta.

“But in my head, iba ang sinasabi ng ulo ko. Parang, ‘Well, wait ’til you hear me sing.’ I always have that confidence with my voice,” lahad pa ni Regine.

‘Okey lang if you think that I’m ugly. You don’t have to look at me but wait ’til you hear me sing.’ It was always like that.”

Hindi ako naging insecure kasi my father would always have this way of making me feel confident about myself lalo na kung madidinig n’ya sa harap ko na sasabihan akong ‘pangit.’

Dagdag pa n’ya: “That’s why I never got insecure about my appearance. As a matter of fact, naging challenge for me. Sinabihan akong, ‘Hindi ka sisikat kasi pangit ka.’ [Sa isip ko], ‘Talaga ba? Let’s see. Gagalingan ko pa.’

And the rest is history.

Payo n’ya sa mga fans na gusto ding maging successful sa buhay, “Find what you are passionate about. Kasi parang feeling ko, it starts there.

Lahat tayo naman nangangarap na ‘sana maging sikat akong artista’ or ‘maging milyonaryo ako’, or whatever there is. But you need to find your passion kasi doon lalabas lahat ng creativity mo.

“You will fail at one point, but you’ll learn to stand up and do it again,” pagtatapos ni Regine.
